This is the view of my apartment. Wonder what yours looks like.
This / This / This / This or maybe this?
Or wait are you still in that same apartment. I know that one.

When I got your text, I woke up with a gash in my mouth. I’m walking around tasting blood but it’s no surprise. It’s my wisdom teeth, they do this. They always stop though, and I forget. Does this mean they keep growing like a millimeter each time. I mean can they—I feel like I’m too grown for that.
I’m walking home tasting blood. Just as I pass the two guys before me, one of them goes, do you live in that building?
Yes. / He goes, you all do. You all look good.
They’re just walking up and down the hill to work off a big dinner. Chinese. They’d given the place a second chance but apparently didn’t deserve it. The girl who works there is nice though. They forgot her name.
Eight generations deep, Bronx jews. The one who does all the talking i think his name’s Ian. He lives with his mom. Looks 55 but probably 45. His wife left him. I ask if he gave her a lot of gifts. Yeah, I was real generous, but she changed.
Ok forgot to text you back, but you’re on my mind.
Michael says movie people came and took photos of his hands. Both him and his brother’s. Adam Sandler’s didn’t look right.
When he said no to being there all day, they went with the other guy downtown who could be there all day. The movie people shook their heads when Michael said he could close up for lunch and drop by for a couple hours. Who do you think you are—Adam Sandler?
Tall blonde walks in. 38ish. Her bangs are long almost covering her eyes. Tight jeans, panty line showing. Christina. No, maybe Alex.
She goes I need the left one stretched. I had an injury, and my left foot grew somehow in width. Michael flips them over to read the soles. This one’s 39 and a half and that’s 40. Michael’s mom weighs in: no, this one says 38 and a half. That’s even tighter.
Oh. Her eyes sort of wander about the counter. This must be my sister’s. Think we accidentally swapped lefts. Michael and mom smile—honey wake up—but her eyes are foggy. She calls her sister but no answer. I’ll be back with the other one but can you clean these by Wednesday?
She was walking around thinking her foot grew, trying to understand why. The shoe never crossed her mind. Or her sister. I mean her foot grew!

Ok my gash is closed. It’s still raised but feels closed.
So tell me what’s new. How’s work? How’s your mom? Are you still dating the same guy

In movies, room tone is essential because it fills the gap.
People instantly notice "true" silence, an empty track, which is a distinct choice. (Think Space Odyssey.)
Room tone makes the filmed reality feel real.
I wanted to do a thought experiment by putting a spin on that usefulness.
What if the room tone doesn't fill the gap?
What if it rejects any sense of place and purposefully disorients us?
I asked friends to send their room tones via voice memo. I got 39.
I staggered the tracks to show degrees of saturation. Then I used modulation (harmonics, low pass/high pass, LFOs) to sculpt the noise and tease out any possibility of a musical character.
